how can i repair a tub diverter broken off?

tub repair

I’m doing some home improvements and have changed out the pipe and cover where the shower head are, the drain cover, etc in my tub. I removed the diverter cover (the diverter is by itself, not on the spout) and the piece in the back that stops up the tub is broken off. We knew it didn’t work before we removed it but thought we’d be able to fix part of it. At the moment there is nothing at all attached to the back of the diverter. There is also nothing in the pipe behind the diverter.

I’m trying to find out what should be on the back of the diverter. It appears as though there is nothing at all in the pipe between the diverter and the drain. I’m looking for information on how to fix this as well as a possible diagram as to what it should look like assembled. I realize I may have to remove a wall behind the tub to fix it (or call a plumber to do so) but would like to see what it should look like first.
I used the wrong word – its a triplever cover and the back that connects to the drain and stops the tub is broken. The diverter (tub vs shower) is on the water control plate.
